What our music team will look like 10 years from now.

Most local churches would average between 50 to 150 members. And musicians aren't always in abundant supply. I've seen churches where there are enough musicians to meet all the needs of the church, and then there are others who have to rely on one or two players to lead the church in worship and singing. One church I ministered in lately had to get a pianist in from another church to help them out. The minister told me: "we struggle to find a competent musician at the best of times..."
One thing I've always tried to do at my local church, is to encourage and grow new, young talent. What we invest in our young people today will be what we reap in the church of tomorrow (10 years from now).

I'm a competent musician and song leader today because I was inspired as a young adult to grow in those areas by a pastor leading our youth group. I would watch him play guitar, and loved being around him, because he led the music in a lively, energetic way.
I was so inspired by him that I went out and bought a second hand guitar (I was about 19 years old) I player night and day, practising my first few chords (I still remember them... D, Em and A7).
When the pastor heard about me trying my hand at playing guitar, he called on me to play alongside him at youth meetings. I tried my best to keep up with him, making lots of mistakes along the way - but boy, did I learn fast. He kept on encouraging me and soon he "forced" me to lead the singing at one youth event. It was a complete "train wreck." But rather than be put off by my failure, I was motivated to work even harder and get it right next time.

To cut a long story short, I kept on growing through the years. I practised for probably 2 hours or more a day. I went for lessons. Bought books on music and guitar playing. I watched guys closely on TV. I'd strain my ears to hear what chords or riffs were being played on a CD. I'd ask fellow guitar players for tips.

Soon I was leading music at bible school, playing at old age homes, in small group settings and occasionally in church. But the accumulative effect is that today I can use my gifting in music to bless my local church. And I've made it my mission to equip as many people as possible to be a blessing in their local church.
I've been doing this for nearly 15 years now, teaching guitar one night per week. One of my greatest rewards came in an email last year when a young school boy I used to teach and encourage in my first church traced me via a google search. It was 10 years since the last time I saw him. He has since grown up, qualified as an optometrist, got married, and moved to a city in South West Africa. He wrote me an email to say thank you for the encouragement I'd given him back then, and informed me that he was part of his local church band.
I hope to hear lots of stories like that in the years to come. Hearing about young people (and older ones) that I've encouraged and helped along the way, now blessing their local church with their abilities and gifting in music.
I pray that you would do the same for people around you. I hopefully 10 years from now someone will write you an email and thank you for your time and encouragement, and tell you how they are now involved in their local church band.

Be inspired!

New Worship Guitar Tuition DVD's

Better guitar playing in your local church.

Joe Vermeulen (Pastor of Grace Reformed Church, Perth) has been teaching guitar to church musician for the past 15 years. He brings a wealth of experience and insight into playing specifically in church settings, using both hymns and contemporary worship songs to teach good guitar technique. Before coming to Perth, he was the Worship Pastor at Bray Park Community Church, Brisbane.

“Go beyond the basics of playing the same old chords all the time. There’s a creative world of alternative approaches waiting to be discovered, many of these are easier to play and sound better than the typical approach most guitarists use.” – Joe V

"Joe’s lessons are all about making it simple by focussing on ease of play."
Ruben Schon - Perth

"His teaching methods are very practical, easy to understand, and he has many 'trade secrets' that are of huge benefit, and cannot be learned from a book."
Tiiu Crouch- Brisbane

Jesus, Name above all names (Alternative Lyrics)

Wanting more than one verse to sing, I wrote 3 verses based on the theme of
Phillipians 2:8-11
verse 1. Jesus laying down His glory coming down to earth,
verse 2. the Suffering Servant
verse 3. the Risen Lord.

The chords I've used also reflect the tone of each verse, 2 being sad in minor keys, and 3 being victorious written with a key change and lots of major chords. See the next blog for a chords breakdown.

1. Jesus
Promised Messiah
Laid down your glory
Took on a servant’s nature

Son of God
Came down from heaven
Dwelt among us
Emmanuel

2. Lamb of God
Humble and lowly
Suffering Servant
Atoning sacrifice

Crucified
Willingly gave Your life
Jesus, You bled and died
Entered the grave

3. Risen Lord
Conquering Victor
You rose victorious
Death could not hold You down

Given - the Name above all names
Lion of Judah
King of all kings

Battle Hymn (alternative lyrics)

Alternative words by Joe Vermeulen.
Being in a congregation of mosly South African migrants who knew the tune, but for many the high English words had little meaning - I rewrote parts of the lyrics to suit our people, thereby making it more singable and understandable.

My eyes have seen the glory of the coming of the Lord
It is written that the Son will come, creation to restore
But until that day, His Church will pray
For God to open doors
His Kingdom to advance

(Chorus 1)
Glory, glory, hallelujah!
Glory, glory, hallelujah!
Glory, glory, hallelujah!
His truth is marching on.

In the beauty of the lilies, Christ was born across the sea,
With a glory in His being that transfigures you and me:
As He died to make men holy, let us live to make men free,
While God is marching on.

(Chorus 2)
Glory, glory, hallelujah!
Glory, glory, hallelujah!
Glory, glory, hallelujah!
While God is marching on.

We can almost hear the trumpet sound
The Lord’s return is near
There are still so many people lost His Gospel they must hear
Still the Spirit and the Church say “Maranatha, Come!”
The Lord’s return is near!

(Chorus 3)
Glory, glory, hallelujah!
Glory, glory, hallelujah!
Glory, glory, hallelujah!
Our God is marching on.

I love you Lord, and I lift my voice. 2'nd verse

Original lyrics:
I love You Lord
And I lift my voice
To worship You
Oh my soul, rejoice.

Take joy my King
In what You hear
Let it be a sweet, sweet sound
In Your ear.

Additional Easter themed verse: (Joe Vermeulen)Jesus You are
The Lamb of God
Who takes away
All my sin, and shame

(rest note) - Crucified
You bled and died
Yet You rose again
Lord, Your name
Is lifted high
